Stars giant short-lived

The size of the stars tell us something about the duration of their lives. In fact more of a star is bigger and more voraciously consumes the hydrogen inside. It ends when the hydrogen, the star ends up (often with a bang of a supernova).
For example, if the sun with its size has a perspective of life 10 billion years (and he is still half) a star that is only twice as great prospects of the sun will shrink tremendously just 750 million years. In contrast, a star just smaller than the sun, say a fifth, will have a duration of 25 billion years!
A star 60 times bigger than the sun, and there are as can be seen from the drawing, will live just 3 million years. Nothing compared to the sun.
What is even more interesting if we think that some very distant giant stars that we get a faint light could now be stone dead already, but since light has a speed limit we still we have not seen the explosion.

Bella Guccini song about stars, horoscopes and meaning of life. A bit melancholy as his style, but beautiful. The video is no exception.

What are the minimum of Algol

This evening there is the "minimum of Algol."
Algol (which means devil from the vocabulary Arabic) is a star in the constellation Perseus, almost 93 years away from us the light, and is the prototype of a binary star eclipses.
What are eclipsing binary stars? Are binary stars, that is double that revolve closely with each other. They are so close that our eye can not separate them, but their light decreases when you line up on the directive of our terrestrial viewing, because obviously the front cover of the light behind. For this reason we speak of eclipse.
light of this star, even for this pair of stars, regularly varies in intensity over a period of about three days going from minimum to maximum, or vice versa.

Horoscopes

Ancient civilizations used the apparent motion of the sun, moon, planets and stars to determine the succession seasons. Later it spread slowly convinced that the regular motion of celestial objects could be used to predict the future and many superstitions were associated with crossing the zodiac constellations (those crossed by the sun). Astrology was developed from these convictions.

More than 2000 years ago were described as the date by which the sun passes in front of each constellation of the Zodiac: Aries

March 21-April 20 Taurus April 21-May 21
Gemini May 22-June 22 Cancer June 23-23
July
Leo July 24-August 23
Virgin August 24 to September 23
Libra September 24-October 23
Scorpio October 24-November 22
Sagittarius November 23-December 21
Capricorn December 22-January 20
Aquarius January 21-February 19
Pisces February 20-March 20

TODAY The dates mark the apparent motion of the Sun in the zodiac are different, both because of precess of the Earth, which means that the ecliptic does not coincide with that of the time, and because the official definition of the 88 constellations has changed the boundaries between them.
The precessing motion indicates that the axis of rotation of the earth, which as you know is tilted, slowly turns to form a complete circle in 26,000 years. In 2000 years it was then moved a little but sufficiently because the reference is fixed in the background, just the stars and constellations, is no longer coincide with the time.

The dates of the current passage of the sun in the zodiac are: Aries

April 19 to May 13 Taurus May 14 to June 20
Gemini June 21-July 20
Cancer
July 21 to August 10 Leo August 11 to September 16 Virgin

September 17 to October 30 Libra October 31 to November 22 Scorpio
November 23 to November 29
Ophiuchus November 30 to December 17 Sagittarius

December 18 to January 18 Capricorn January 19 to February 15 Aquarius 16
February-11 March
Pisces March 12-April 18

Chasing constellations

Typing HERE you can download a lightweight program that has served me very much when I started looking at the sky.
After unpacking the package you install it by clicking on the file called MIRAPLA. At this point it appears the sky as it appears on the evening of the day today looking north. At first glance seem like a dark screen with dots scattered fairly insignificant here and there. Instead typing ENTER will recognize how those dots are transformed into constellations. With darts of course you move to the west, east to the south, and the up arrow you can observe the constellations higher on the head. Funny also the key Page Up and Page Down instead allow visual change to show how the sky changes with the passage of time looking in the same direction.
However, the easiest thing is to type ESC, and there you will see the basic guide to bring up the constellations, movements in space, time, and also decide on the day when you look at a certain part of the sky.
Obviously missing the names of stars and above - this limit is the biggest - the planets. But the software, as old as the cuckoo, it's really useful to learn to recognize the constellations.

Conjunction lower and upper

The inner planets of the solar system, ie the inner than the path that makes the earth around the sun, than we may be in certain periods than in inferior conjunction.
These planets, that is the only Mercury and Venus are inferior conjunction when they are in the middle, the sun earth view, and say they are in superior conjunction when they are opposed, on a stretch as a land provisions, only inner planet.
The outer planets instead can be in conjunction "than" because they are always outside the Earth's orbit. It is said that an outer planet is in "opposition" where, at night land, will be on a line that sees lined up the sun, earth and outer planet, the earth exactly in the center. Instead it will be simply a superior conjunction aligned in the order that sees the earth, sun and outer planets.
This month, for example, on the 28th, Jupiter will be in superior conjunction with the sun

dances with Jupiter Uranus

In 2010 Jupiter passes through the constellation Aquarius (the Square of Pegasus below) and ending in Pisces where between July and August will change direction (this is called motion clearly apparent, as seen from earth) and slow down their pace to return in the last months of Aquarius. For further embellish what we will think that Uranus is right on the same journey in the border point between the two constellations, creating a ballet summer autumn with Jupiter will not be his to lose. The points of closest approach will occur on June 6 (round trip), unfortunately with the disorder of the moonlight, and September 22 (return journey) at night.
Jupiter is known, is the largest planet in the solar system, but compared to Uranus is also closer to us, this explains why the apparent size of the image will be those above. Of course, for those who like me is hard to "catch" Uranus first time, you find yourself in those given a good "target" due to the presence of Jupiter.
